Must-See Museums In Calgary

If you’re a history-lover, you’re not going to want to miss some of our favorite museums!

Battalion Park

This is a quick visit, but still worthy of a spot on this list.  Battalion Park, located at Camp Sarcee, is a memorial dedicated to the soldiers in World War I.  It features rocks shaped into the numbers of the battalions that were sent overseas – battalions 51, 113, 137, and 151.

Calgary has a large Chinese population, so it’s only right that there be a museum dedicated to the history and development of the Chinese community.  It features numerous artifacts, as well as replicas of important artifacts like the Terracotta soldiers.  Additionally, the centre offers various courses, from the Mandarin language to Chinese art to martial arts.

Previously one of the most important forts in the time of the settlers, Fort Calgary is now a museum dedicated to the First Nations people who lived in the area, as well as the settlers who came after them and developed Calgary into a city.  The exhibits carefully pay homage to both, and show the evolution of Calgary over the past centuries.

This museum focuses on the history and culture of the Tsuut’ina Nation that lived in the area, predating the city of Calgary.  Exhibits feature arts and crafts, clothing, headdresses, and even Chief Bullhead’s homestead, located behind the main building.  It’s fascinating to see a culture that is often forgotten.

Heritage Park

Heritage Park is a historical village, replicating life at the turn of the century, complete with a Hudson’s Bay Company Fur Trading Post, a drug store, a miner’s cabin, and police barracks.  Also within the village is the Gasoline Alley Museum, dedicated to the history and impact of cars on society and economy.  You can also visit the Famous 5 Centre of Canadian Women, located in a replica of Nellie McClung’s house and dedicated to the five leading women who fought for women’s rights in Canada.  The entire village is fascinating, and shows an important time in Canadian and Calgarian history.

Embrace history while you’re in Calgary and learn about the city, both past and present!
