Ghosts Of Calgary

Calgary is an extremely haunted city, so if you’re intrigued by the supernatural, you’ll love hearing about some of the local ghosts!

The Zoo Bridge Boy

The bridge near Calgary Zoo may be gone but the spirits linger.  In 1946, a 6 year old boy named Donnie Goss was lured under the bridge by a stranger.  Unfortunately, that stranger was exactly the type of person parents warn their children about.  He beat and sexually assaulted Donnie, before stabbing him to death.  To this day, over 50 years later, Donnieàs spirit has remained in the area, calling for help occasionally, causing Emergency Services to make a trip out a few times a year.  Other days, he’s looking for playmates, so consider taking a ball out there to play with him.

Old Grace Hospital

It’s called Riley Park Health Centre now, but back when the building was known as Old Grace Hospital, a mother, as well as her baby, passed away during childbirth.  The woman is still seen wandering the maternity ward, playing with new infants, or weeping for her own.

The Devil’s Playground

Years and years ago, an old schoolhouse stood in the area now known as The Devil’s Playground, until a nun set fire to the building.  Seven children died in the fire, leaving their spirits to haunt the area.  Bystanders have heard the sounds of laughing and playing, and periodic sightings of a young girl holding a ball have been reported.  Attempts to demolish the remenants of the building were repeatedly sabatoged, adding credence to the mysterious haunting.

Deane House

The Deane House used to be owned by the Umpervilles, a husband and wife who faced a tragic demise in a stabbing-suicide.  Now the house is haunted by them and other ghosts collected over the years, all seen regularly by visitors.

Knox United Church

This church has a group of ghosts, all old ladies who have an otherworldly knitting circle.  If you visit the church, you may be able to catch a glimpse of them, or attend a service.  They aren’t generally fans of the organist, periodically slapping him and yelling “stop playing” or causing audio malfunctions.

Enjoy Calgary’s ghostly side by visiting some of these haunted places while you’re in town.
